Are Traditional Weddings Going Out of Style?

Source

I’m not even engaged yet but I am already stressing over the wedding budget.  Who wants to shell out thousands of dollars on a one day affair?  I much rather not be in debt, and spend money on the honeymoon or put the funds towards something we need for our household.  The cost of weddings is outrageous if you consider the Knot’s estimated total of approximately $32,000.  According to Thumbtack, that cost is actually much lower at $12,000 – they argue that the Knot includes all the incidentals including the ring and the honeymoon.  Either way you look at it, I rather not be paying off $12,000 or $32,000 for the next 5 years.

As I was reading an article about the costs of a wedding where I got these figures from, I couldn’t help but read the comments and wonder – Are Traditional Weddings Going Out of Style?

Just take a look at a few of the comments on the article on Refinery 29

Going to the courthouse and out to dinner with some close family and friends sounds perfect to me.  Who needs an elaborate reception.

I see I’m not the only one who finds this type of wedding to be perfect.  Besides the whole idea of having your bridesmaids and groomsmen dress in uniform is so boring – and not necessary.  They are there to serve as your witnesses and be your support – something they can do without the cost of traditional duties and dress code.

Sounds about right to me. I’ve had my eye on a dress from Amazon that costs about $50 bucks.  A retro 50’s tea length number.  Throw together some nice heels and I’ll get my hair blown out too.  Seriously, I’m not going to spend $1,000+ on a wedding dress ensemble I’ll never wear again.

These were just a a few of the many comments all in support of a cheaper, scaled back wedding and reception. I just can’t help but wonder are couples getting more sensible with marriage?  Is this a trend that will continue and grow?  Have brides stopped buying into the fairy tale that the wedding industry has hammered into us for so many years? Are traditional weddings going out of style?

Weigh in below!  What type of wedding will you have?  Do you see yourself having a traditional affair or walking down the courthouse steps with just your beau?
