New Jersey couple Ash and David said “I do” on the sand outside Southernmost Beach Resort in Key West, FL. Theirs was an intimate affair:  they only invited 23 guests, and instead of a traditional wedding reception, opted for dinner at a beach side restaurant after the ceremony. One of her best friends from high school married them.

Talk about a beautiful, inked wedding couple! I can totally tell that both David and Ash boasted their true selves on their wedding day. Each sported their brightly colored hair (I LOVE the pink ombre!!!) and showed off their ink.

Ash was eager to tell her and David’s story in her photo submission, which made it all the more romantic:

“[We] met in 2007 and dated for two months. We ended up having to split because I am an alcoholic and was unable to function at that time. When we split, I moved to Seattle and sobered up and he stayed in NJ. We did not speak for over three years. We never stopped loving one another however, but I assumed I had done too much damage to make any requests from him. After three years I received an email by accident from him, I knew it was an accident, so I just wrote back a quick note. The following week I was on a plane to see him and during that week we got matching tattoos (you can sneak a peek at David’s chest tattoo in the photo above – it says “happiness only real when shared.” Ash’s tattoo is on the inside of her upper arm). I closed my business in Seattle, and I moved just months later to be with him.”David and Ashley

Ash said, “I tell this story, because this is what the over arching feel behind our wedding was. All this love and pain, and being reunited. I truly believe we thought we had lost one another forever and to get a second chance like this, was unbelievable.”NJ Alternative Brides

Ash gave some advice for alternative brides: “Rock your tattoos and style. You hopefully will only get married once. Don’t worry about what anyone thinks, make it your day. Write your own vows and have someone close to you marry you, so that can share your story and really make it about the two of you. Wear what you want and what makes you comfortable. Don’t be stifled by tradition.”

My favorite part of this submission was the short video preview Ash included. It’s beautifully structured (I’m not surprised–Ash is a cinematographer!) and literally gave me goosebumps. You can see just how special the day was from the couple and their guests. Watch their video here.

Ash’s dad carried a GoPro when he walked her down the aisle. “The footage was funny and amazing,” Ash said. I love this idea, especially to include in a wedding video if you hire a cinematographer to capture your event. She also boasted about her amazing musician Rusty Lemmon. “He was amazing and my husband is still friends with him,” she said. “He learned new songs for us and he has an amazing voice. My husband is also a drummer and while we were on our honeymoon in Key West, Rusty invited him to play along with his band. It was amazing!”David and Ashley Wedding Key West

Despite a last minute challenge (finding a new location about a month before the wedding due to a conflict with the original hotel they were supposed to marry at), Ash said she wouldn’t have done anything different. “The day was absolutely perfect!”
